Give credit where credit is due.

Many years ago, I took part in a school Chinese language writing competition. To my surprise, I won the first prize at that writing competition.

Soon it was the Award Ceremony of the school. I was one of the prize winners.

Then I came to know that my young sister (two years younger) was also a prize winner for an art competition at the same school and would be going on stage to receive her prize.

I was not happy at that.

Because my sister shared the same name, Teo Poh Siang, the same spelling as mine.

I used to feel embarrassed then when people came to know that my sister and I shared the same exact name.

I did the most unkind and unfair deed of my life.

I forced my sister to stay at home on that very award day. I stopped her from attending the Award Ceremony.

I did go up on stage to receive my prize.

But I did not feel proud of myself.

Back home, my sister was crying in sorrow.

I was told either my late father (who was illiterate) or the officer-in-charge made  an error at the time of registration for my sister’s name at the Registry of Births.

Years later, my sister added an English name to her name and she no longer shared the exact name like mine.

That behaviour of mine was selfish. I should never have denied my younger sister from receiving her due recognition at that Award Ceremony especially when she has earned it on her own accord.

Boosting staff morale at workplaces can help greatly in staff retention.

My company, Wisely 98 Pte Ltd provides maintenance management services for condos.

Tan See Hui started as an admin officer in my company about 12 years ago. She is now the condo manager at The Floravale, a condo of more than 750 units. She has received many written praises from condo owners  for herself and for her team.

See Hui’s greatest achievement was the completion of a smart gate system that allowed a vehicle to enter a condo when its number plate is matched digitally. That project helped the condo owners to save at least $60k per year in cost, and won our company to be featured by Channel News Asia (a multinational news channel in Singapore) in 2023 for initiating digitalisation in condos.

At my nomination, the Association of Strata Managers conferred See Hui the prestigious Accredited Strata Manager Award 2024.

Give credit where it’s due! Acknowledge the hard work and let your team know their efforts matter. Start recognising today!
