In 1978, I failed my English exam in secondary school—a moment etched in memory, fueling my resolve.
It wasn’t until 1984 that I decided to truly master English writing.
Knowing that I could not succeed alone, I enrolled in night classes in May that year.
I aimed to conquer the General Paper, English writing that requires critical thinking and communication skills.
I was fortunate to meet Mr. A (his exact name is not revealed because I have not obtained his consent), an exceptional tutor.
He taught me to list points before crafting sentences with reasoning and urged me to read widely. And I did.
I wrote extensively and Mr A was willing to go beyond his classroom exercises to mark my submissions and to coach me.
Came exam day in November, I chose a topic on national defence—a subject close to my heart, fresh from completing National Service.
Though I didn’t pass my English at secondary school (GCE’O’Level), I triumphed in the General Paper at post- secondary school or college ( GCE ‘A’ Level).
This experience taught me that the right guidance could turn failure into success.
